By working with partners to address the digital divide, we ensure every student in the Valley has equal access to a quality education whether that’s at home or in a physical classroom.

Our Programs
School Readiness
It all starts here! When a child goes into their education journey ready to learn, it sets them up for success in the future. We partner with quality care centers in our community to allow them to continue to provide top-level care.
In Arizona, if a child isn’t reading at grade level by 4th grade, they could be held back. Because teachers don’t always have the time to do one-on-one guided reading sessions, students are now able to get connected to passionate professionals, volunteering to tutor, thanks to Vello Online Tutoring.
When a child attends an after school program, they have access to mentoring and counseling to assist with life and school challenges, including readiness for post-secondary education and employment. United Way works to improve access and quality of after school programs.
Each summer, students can lose knowledge equal to two months of learning. To prevent summer learning loss, we are partnered with out-of-school summer centers to add tools to retain and improve literacy skills for kindergarten through 3rd graders.
For children with limited access to food at home, school may be the only place they can get a nutritious meal. We believe in helping kids have a better relationship with food and more focus on their education, not their hunger.
Innovation and Impact – How Vital Nonprofits are Transforming through COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed the socioeconomic inequities many students, families and neighbors face daily. The nonprofits serving our vulnerable community members face their own new set of challenges: growing needs and decreasing funds.
Before the pandemic, the flow of goods coming and going was ongoing and easily manageable, but nothing could have prepared us for the vast amount of donations requested and received in response to COVID-19 and the impact on our community.
The Digital Divide represents an urgent concern that continues to grow in light of the current pandemic, as it reinforces existing social inequalities between various socioeconomic groups.

Get a Dollar-for-Dollar Tax Credit With Your Donation!
As many families struggle with emerging-needs such as food, shelter and financial stability, United Way and our many nonprofit and school partners rely more than ever on tax credit contributions, which also gives donors a break on state income tax liability.
The Valley of the Sun United Way Making Choices Simulation bridges the gap from misconception and assumptions, to understanding that at any given moment one of us could be susceptible to experiencing poverty in our lifetime.
Vello Goes The Distance: Teaching Kids to Read at Home!
Through the Vello program, Valley of the Sun United Way was prepared to ensure children in our community would not be left behind when schools closed and families retreated to their homes to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Over the last 5 years we’ve come together with over 60 local organizations to address the unique needs of children and youth living in Phoenix’s urban core.
