I would like to tell you a little bit about the difficulties and impact the (COVID-19) pandemic has had on my life and that of my family. We have been affected in every way physically, emotionally and of course economically. Personally, it was very difficult to adapt to being the one to take on the role of the teachers, from whom I give them my admiration and respect to be so patient with our children. It was a challenge to have to understand the virtual system but I managed to adapt quickly to be able to help my children. I also had to update myself with all the subjects in which my children had problems to be able to help them with their academic work. For some of my children the changes were easy but others had problems because it was complicated going to online classes, and had difficulties adapting to the virtual system, but we find a way for them to continue. We all supported one another and we managed to overcome these challenges.

The eldest of my children graduated from high school, and was saddened that they could not do their graduation as they should. For me this had a very strong impact because I wanted my son to have the opportunity to experience this great step and achievement in his life. Emotionally we have all experienced depression and stress. We have had to stay at home for the sake of our health and others. My family and I have a very active schedule and they played sports every day. After this (COVID-19), it has been very difficult to stay physically active. We have managed to work out at home but it is not the same. They have had muscle aches and a lot of tiredness from the change of pace in their life.

Economically it has been very stressful and difficult as we live day to day and the only one who works is my husband. He was out of work for a while and when he started again, work was very scarce from one to two days a week. This wasn’t enough to pay our expenses. I sought any assistance possible, like St. Mary's Food Bank. Additionally, Stand for Children organization has provided us with educational assistance to keep our children academically active, and of course, the help of Valley of the Sun United Way has given us was of great help with food, diaper wipes and personal care. It was a big help in these difficult times where we couldn't find things in shops. We are very grateful to these organizations for taking the time to help the community and my family. Lastly, I am concerned for the coming school year; wondering what measures and educational plans universities and schools will take to keep students healthy and safe. We must adapt and get accustomed to the use of facemasks, gloves and disinfectants and maintain cleanliness at all times.

These times have been very difficult for many people. It is reassuring to know that organizations like United Way and Stand for Children who are here for us, providing much needed resources and supporting our efforts to strengthen our communities.
