Valley of the Sun United Way has a five-year plan for creating Mighty Change in Maricopa County. We are working alongside our nonprofit partners to achieve seven bold community goals. One of those goals is to increase access to healthy, affordable food.
By 2026, we plan to decrease food insecurity by 50%. One organization helping us make this happen is TigerMountain Foundation.
TigerMountain Foundation creates and manages community gardens in urban areas across Phoenix. The gardens are filled with fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Many of these gardens are located in areas that are considered ‘food deserts.’
Food deserts are areas where people have limited access to healthy food. They are often in low-income areas surrounding larger cities. People living in these areas often have to travel more than a mile to find a grocery store.
TigerMountain Foundation sells produce at local farmer’s markets. All of the food is donation-based. People are able to pay whatever they can afford, no questions asked.
One of their gardens, Spaces of Opportunity, is located next door to a senior living facility. Many of the residents do not drive and can’t get to a grocery store. TigerMountain allows them to walk to the garden to get the food they need.
Not only does TigerMountain provide food for our community, they also help with job training. People are able to work at the garden and local farmer’s markets. They learn about sales, budgeting, and running their own business.
TigerMountain also offer employment opportunities in gardening and landscaping.
Donating to Valley of the Sun United Way allows TigerMountain Foundation to continue providing food to people in our community. Over the last two years, TigerMountain has supplied an average of 40,000 meals to people in our community.
