Get to know Elizabeth Mahoney, a Women United member who supports our organization by actively understanding community needs, volunteering, and by sponsoring our âWe Are Unitedâ luncheon each year.
Q: In todayâs busy world, tell us one thing you do on a regular basis to ensure âself-careâ.
A: I wish I only had one thing to share, but I do so many things for self-care. I think the most important is exercise, but the one I do the most is listening to audiobooks or podcasts that I find inspiring or motivating. It keeps me joyful and constantly thinking.
Q: Women United focuses on ensuring that children are able to be successful in school by helping to fund programs that end hunger in the classroom. How do you like to engage in making an impact?
A: I had the opportunity to visit Academia Del Pueblo recently to observe âBreakfast in the Classroomâ. It was amazing to see the impact first hand of such a wonderful program. The students were connecting, the teacher was happy â and they were all ready to learn and work together!
I like to engage in a variety of ways: Time, Talent and Treasure. Though I canât always give to all three areas equally, I make sure that I am engaging in some way through giving of my time, skill-set, and money. I find this is the greatest way to use my unique gifts to make an impact.
Q: Why does Philanthropy matter?
A: I feel so blessed to be born in this country, in my family, and with the mentors and resources I have come in contact with along the way. I had zero control and input in any of that. It is important to me to share in the opportunities I have been granted with others. I feel many have a starting line far behind mine, outside of their control and choices, and I want everyone to have the opportunity to reach their full potential. It matters because we have the ability to connect with each other and improve the lives of those around us.
Q: Tell us something that most people wouldnât know about you.
A: I am going to be the District Governor July 2020 for Rotary in Northern Arizona (District 5495). I am very excited for the opportunity to serve my community at a deeper and more meaningful level.

Q: What would you like women considering joining Valley of the Sun United Wayâs Women United movement to know?
A: We need YOU first and foremost. You have skills that are only yours to offer â we would love to become stronger with you! There is so much work to be done for the wonderful kids in our community, and you can be part of shaping their outcome in a positive way!
Q: So often women are humble and donât like to share their strengths and what they love about themselves, so we are asking you to do that now!
A: This is a sweet question. I just know I love life and the people in it. It breaks my heart to see someone suffering, especially when itâs unnecessary. I have a heart that pours love and joy, and I want to share in that with you! âAs we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.â â Nelson Mandela
